Injured in the workplace? Here’s what to do next

Getting injured is never fun, especially if you get injured while you are working. When you are injured you want to get the care that you need so that you can make a speedy recovery.

What is workers’ compensation?

All Oklahoma employers are legally required to carry workers’ compensation insurance, so that when one of their employees are injured while at work, they can help pay for the recuperation. This type of insurance covers:

  • Cost of the medical care required
  • Income that you missed due to being out for injury
  • Disability compensation, if you have an injury that affects you for a long time
  • Monetary benefits to family if you are killed on the job

What do you do after injury?

  1. See a doctor: If you are injured you need to see a doctor. If in an emergency, see any doctor available/ of your choosing. If it is not an emergency, check with your employer to see if there is a doctor associated with the company you should see. However, if they do not get you treatment within one week of the injury, you can see your preferred doctor.
  2. Tell your employer: In Oklahoma, you need to inform your employer within 30 days of your injury. If you do not, you may not receive all or any compensation for your trauma.
  3. Documentation: When you tell your employer that you have been injured, they will likely have you fill out a form discussing the details of the injury. This will aide in getting you compensation.

Injuries that happen at work can be horrible. Following these steps will help you get on the road to recover and back to work as quickly as possible.
