Measures Employers Should Take To Help The Disabled

“The time is always right

to do what’s right.”

Martin Luther King, Jr.

Since most of us will spend the majority of our days, weeks, months, years, and lives with the people we work with, our work environment has a direct affect on the quality of our lives. While there are certainly some employees that prove to be less motivated than others, most of us want to leverage our talent, education, and experience to contribute to the team.

A healthy work environment clears the road for talented people to do their jobs well. Often unwittingly, employers allow obstacles to their own success to exist by not protecting a safe work environment for every employee. This is particularly true of disabled employees. Sometimes employers and employees allow discrimination based on disability.

Employers of 15 or more are held to certain standards in providing safe work environment for disabled employees. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was enacted in 1990 (and updated in 2009) in order to represent the civil rights of persons with disabilities.

In the workplace, this means employers are held responsible for making sure that an environment of discrimination does not occur, and that if it does, there are clearly outlined procedures for filing appropriate complaints. In addition physical considerations must be made within the facilities that house the organization. Physical “architectural barriers” in the workplace must be removed from older buildings and new buildings must be built to code in consideration of disabled employees, clients, and visitors.
