What Happens If A Major Retail’s Union Goes On Strike?

On retail’s biggest day of the year several union-backed employees of America’s largest major retailer united in a Black Friday strike. AFL-CIO has been in support of these organized Wal-Mart strikes for the last few years for a number of reasons. AFL-CIO President encouraged support of the strikers in this statement,

“The entire labor movement will proudly stand with the brave workers at Walmart
as they lead the largest mobilization to date for better wages and schedules.”

Many who supported and participated considered efforts to be successful. Here are a few ways retail unions’ strikes can have an impact for good.

Raising Poverty Awareness

When media attention is garnered around a strike it raises awareness of the issues at hand. In the case of the Walmart strikes, unions and workers wanted to voice their appeals for reasonable pay. Unfair payment of employees is said to perpetuate poverty amongst the families of Walmart workers.

Increased Participation

When numbers of strikers is on the increase, this not only helps the cause, but it helps those brave enough to step out become a part of something bigger than themselves. The threat of retaliation from large retailers does not seem to stop the hundreds of employees who choose to stand up for what’s right in the Black Friday strikes.

Ultimate Change In Retailer Policies

When retail workers strike there are usually a number of reasons. Affecting change in the organization at large is the intended goal and when that happens this is a win for all involved.
