2016 Deadliest Year on Oklahoma Roads Since 2007

The National Safety Council recently published a report that showed that fatal car accidents have increased by 9 percent in the first 6 months of 2016, as compared to the first six months of 2015. This increase is 18 percent higher than the fatal car accidents that occurred in the same time period in 2014. With this knowledge, 2016 is heading toward being the deadliest year for motorists and passengers alike on the roads of our country since the year 2007.

Fatalities By The Numbers Percentages do not put numbers and figures in our minds like actual numbers do. Since the beginning of 2016, 19,100 victims have died in car accidents and 2.2 million victims have sustained injuries in collisions. The National Safety Council reported that these injuries and fatalities cost upward of $205 billion so far this year. This increase started back in 2014 and is not showing any signs of trending back downward. Oklahoma Statistics Last year, over the course of the three-day Labor Day weekend, Oklahoma roads saw impaired driving incidents increase tremendously, as well. In fact, 66 percent of Oklahoma car accidents that occurred over the Labor Day weekend in Oklahoma were due to impaired driving. Impaired driving should never be an issue on our roads, because Oklahoma has many different options for people to choose from, rather than driving drunk or under the influence of drugs. Avoiding Driving When Risks Are High People need to understand that before they take a chance while driving on Oklahoma's roads and highways that there are other choices. Texting while driving and chatting on cell phone when behind the wheel should be things of the past. Yet, people take these chances every single day when they are driving, pushing fatalities and seriously injured car accident victims to record highs. Ensuring Safety On Oklahoma Roads For The Rest Of 2016 At Frasier, Frasier & Hickman, LLP, we hope that the second half of 2016 sees lower car accident fatalities. We cannot make people stop participating in dangerous activities while driving, but we can hope that Oklahomans realize that each and every one of us has the ability to drive these statistics down by ensuring that we follow all traffic safety laws. Those who refuse to follow the rules of the road should simply stay off our roads so that we can all be safer for all of us.
