Workplace safety and the Internet of Things

On Behalf of | Jun 6, 2018 | Workplace Safety

Injuries and even death are common in workplaces throughout the world. According to research by the International Labor Organization, more than 500 workers are victims of injury on the job every minute. Workplace injuries seriously affect the health and well-being of employees as well as the bottom line of many companies. The Internet of Things, or IoT, may be one of the ways to improve safety for workers in all types of jobs.

Employees who work alone can be particularly vulnerable to dangers. Smart devices help keep these workers connected to their organization and nearby emergency contacts so that they can get assistance quickly if something goes wrong. IoT geolocation technology coupled with audio alerts and group chat abilities can turn ordinary smartphones into comprehensive safety devices for solitary workers out on the job.

IoT devices can also be used by employers to monitor real-time safety conditions at the workplace. Wireless sensors, data trackers and other wearable equipment can be used with big data to analyze workplace safety and find areas for improvement. Data can be particularly valuable at hazardous sites where extreme weather, airborne toxins and other forces may be dangerous to the health of workers. Personal heart rate, blood pressure and other vital signs can also be monitored.

Companies are looking for IoT solutions to improve workplace safety because they are responsible for the well-being of their employees when they’re on the job. If an employee experiences an injury on the job, they may be eligible to receive compensation for healthcare, rehabilitation, and pain and suffering. A lawyer might analyze a injured person’s case and find out if seeking compensation through a settlement or lawsuit is in their best interest.
