Does color matter in car safety?

Driving is one of the most dangerous things you do. When you choose a new car, the safety features on offer probably play some role in which model you choose.

Yet, one safety feature you might not have considered is the color of the vehicle. Research shows that certain colors of vehicles are safer than others.

It’s all about standing out

You don’t need to have a flashy car to stand out and in fact, many expensive cars don’t stand out. At least not when being driven at night, or on a crowded road. The reason they don’t stand out is because their paintwork is dark in color.

While a bright yellow Corvette would stand out, a jet-black one would not do so nearly as much. Equally, an olive green Jeep Wrangler is not going to stand out as much as one in white.

Lighter colors such as white, beige and yellow are more visible than dark ones such as black, gray or navy blue.

If your vehicle stands out, it is easier for other drivers to notice you. If it is easier for them to notice you, it is less likely they will crash into you or make a sudden movement, such as a lane change, that causes you to crash into them.

Other options to aid visibility

All is not lost if you have a dark-colored vehicle. Using daytime running lights can aid massively with daytime visibility. Ensuring your lights are all in working order is essential, and upgrading the bulbs (within the legal limitations) might also make you more visible.

Good positioning also helps other drivers see you. Try to avoid being sandwiched between two or more larger vehicles, for instance. Try to avoid sitting in someone’s blind spot as well.

If another driver injures you in a crash, there’s a good chance they did not see you in time. Showing you took steps to stay visible could increase the chances you get the compensation you need.
