Why drivers should not listen to fast, loud music

When most people get in the car, one of the first things they do is turn on music. It is important for them to pay careful attention to the music that they select. If it is calming and relaxing, such as classical music, it can help them be a better driver.

But the opposite is also true. Studies show that drivers who listen to fast and loud music tend to make more driving mistakes. Fast music in particular often encourages drivers to speed, even if they are unaware that they’re doing so.

Additionally, loud music can make it harder for people to concentrate on the road. Some drivers will say that they find it “harder to see” when they are listening to music. If they have to find a specific address, they may turn the music down to look for the house number. This isn’t because music actually makes it more difficult to see, of course, but simply because music is a distraction – so your brain can’t focus and it’s harder to process what you are seeing.

Should drivers pick their favorite music?

These days, it is easier than ever for drivers to pick their favorite music when they get in the car. They can simply stream whatever they want to listen to on their phone.

But, there is evidence that drivers are more distracted when they feel more connected to the music. If they are given a playlist that has been created for them, it is less distracting than if they get to select the playlist or the artist on their own.
